About Us
Pauline's Place Youth Shelter - Sault Ste Marie - Ontario

The Community Housing Association of Sault Ste. Marie which had been active in the community since 1987 was selected as the lead agency for the development of the youth shelter. Pauline's Place opened its doors in May 2004.

Pauline's Place Youth Shelter has 8 beds available for homeless youth (16-21 years old), until they find more permanent housing. The shelter is designed to be as muchlike a family enviroment as possible. The house is set up like a home with bedrooms, kitchen, family room and back yard. Youth may have to share a room depending upon the number of residents. The shelter is located in a central residential neighbourhood where bus routes are accessible.

Testimonials

There are rules that the resident must follow, including chores and curfews, simular to those outlined in a regular family home. These rules help provide structure, boundaries and a sense of security for the residents. The 24 hour staff strive to be understanding, patient and non-judgmental to help convey to the residents that they are accepted and supported. Since the shelter opened its doors in May 2004 over 400 youth have accessed Pauline's Place services.

Youth Testimonials

“If Pauline’s Place didn’t exist I would be living on the streets.” 17 yr. old resident.

“When I first moved here I thought, Oh God not another homeless shelter. But now that I’ve been here awhile I feel more at home here then I did in my real home.” 17 yr. old former resident.

“It gave me a good safe place to live. It gave me people to talk to and push me to go back to school and work. I don’t think I would be getting along with my parents or back in school or at work. I would probably be living in an apartment on welfare not doing much if I didn’t live at Pauline’s Place. It was a good experience living here.” 18 yr. old former resident.

“I had moved from Sudbury Ont. struggling to keep myself together had no where to go and decided to move back to Sault Ste. Marie, Pauline’s Place was the first place I had called. They have a lot of great people willing to help if wanted. They helped me emotionally, helped me find a job, apartment, as well making sure we never went hungry. They have rules that will help you with life skills, from solving problems to cleaning.” 18 yr. old former resident.
